On 20 September, the store, which covers two floors for a total of 1500m_, will open in Milan: Pirelli Corso Venezia, the brand?s first flagship store (located at Corso Venezia,1). the design by architect Renato Montagner, creative director of collections, emerges as an archetype, destined to open a new chapter in shop-design, commerce and services.

The street, and above all, every movement along it (cars, motorbikes and pedestrians)enters physically into the store: the first street in the shop. All the collections and the Pirelli PZero special projects are on display, among iconic two and four-wheeled vehicles and Formula 1 video walls. In this way, the outside blends into the interiors, which in turn point to the history of Pirelli and its industrial genes, in an endless trail of tracks and references.

INNOVATIONSAmong the structural innovations, the Workshop, the soundproof wall, the rubber carpet, Robostock (the first robot stockroom keeper), Bruno Munari?s Meo Romeo cat, the airbed fitting rooms and the sailing deck.

A number of services and special projects will be making their debut at this inauguration. Starting with P. spoke: the tailor?s shop for made-to-measure sneakers; the first with leather soles, and completely reversible, like socks.

The gum design area will feature a succession of projects in which the know-how PZero will add to other brands. first up will be the Borsalino tyre hat, and a cinturato Pirelli Valextra luggage set. (See attached information sheet) Gum design?s guest of honour will be artist Scott Campell?s Holy Trinity project. This tattoo artist to the stars, with clients including Sting and Orlando Bloom, has created the first tattooed Diablo Rosso II tyre for a Ducati Diavel, and a jacket coproduced with Dainese. (See attached sheet) SOCIAL SHOPPING. Pictures from the legendary Pirelli calendars, as well as Formula 1 races, garage backstage shots and regattas will be projected on the video wall in the PZero lounge. This will enable fans of the various disciplines to arrange to meet up and form interest groups, like in a social network: with the new aggregative logic of social shopping.

THE DETAILS.name: PIRELLI CORSO VENEZIA.an address that evokes a sense of things Milanese: a sign that pays homage to the hard-working city and its wholesome industrial traditions, where the ?P. Lunga? has strong roots that reach back for over a century.

Above the entrance, a cantilever of studded tyre tread with low-energy LEDs (see lighting sheet) offers an ideal mix of China theatre lights with Pirelli engineering, introducing the public to the excitement of the tyre.

The first ?pictures? are the store windows, designed and lit like stage machinery. While the rubber carpet enters into the heart of the workshop.

The Miami Hurricanes and the Ohio State Buckeyes, two storied college football powerhouses that have recently run afoul of the NCAA, go head to head Saturday night. We’ll know by the end of the night which team is superior on the field. but when it comes to losing money as a result of their respective NCAA investigations, which team will be the winner (loser, actually)?

Here’s how the teams stack up:

The crime: the Buckeyes came under fire last year when players traded autographs, championship rings, and equipment for cash and services at a Columbus tattoo parlor. Head coach Jim Tressel knew about the incident for months, but failed to suspend any of the offending players.

The price: Ohio State forfeited all of its wins from the 2010 season, and the implicated players – Mike Adams, Daniel Herron, Devier Posey, Solomon Thomas, and Terelle Pryor – were suspended for the first five games of the 2011 season (Pryor left the Buckeyes to try his luck in the NFL). Those players had to repay the illicit benefits: Adams had to pay back $1,000; Herron $1,150; Posey $1,250; Thomas $1,505; and Pryor $2,500, according to an Ohio State press release.

However, most of the financial punishment fell on Tressel, who was fined $250,000 by the NCAA in March and eventually resigned, giving up a $3.3 million yearly contract with a $450,000 maximum yearly bonus – the sixth highest salary in college football. Tressel’s contract went through 2014, so that’s a loss of approximately $13.2 million, plus bonus money.

The trouble isn’t over for Ohio State. Earlier, this month, three additional players – Jordan Hall, Travis Howard, and Corey Brown – were suspended for the Buckyes’ home opener against Akron for receiving $200 apiece at an unsanctioned Cleveland charity event. they have been cleared to play in Saturday night’s game.

The crime: According to a Yahoo! Sports report released in August, the Hurricanes could be in far deeper trouble than the Buckeyes. Former booster Nevin Shapiro, who is now serving a 20-year prison sentence for his role in a Ponzi scheme, alleges that he provided players with millions of dollars in illicit benefits, including parties, expensive dinners, trips to strip clubs, and, in one case, money for an abortion. Shapiro also claims that he offered “bounties” for injuries to key players on opposing teams.

Owing to the long-running, visible nature of Shapiro’s violations, the university could be on the hook for a lack of institutional control.

The price: the true severity of the consequences for the program won’t be apparent until the NCAA wraps up its investigation, which could take several months. but the punishments handed down so far have been directed at players, in the form of suspensions and repayment for improper benefits.

According to the NCAA, the most severe punishments went to defensive lineman Olivier Vernon, who was suspended six games and forced to repay $1,200 in restitution for receiving handouts as a recruit. the other implicated players owe less. Ray Ray Armstrong owes $788; Dyron Dye, $738; Jacory Harris, $140; Sean Spence, $275; Travis Benjamin, $150; Marcus Forston, $400, and Adewale Ojomo, $240.

But what does Miami stand to lose in the long run? the University of Southern California’ s Trojans, who endured their own scandal last year over players receiving improper payment, were banned from postseason bowl play for two years, and lost an estimated 30 athletic scholarships (10 per year for three years).

The University of Miami’s website shows freshman tuition at $36,962 per year, plus fees. so if the football program were to lose 10 full-ride scholarships per year, that’s a $369,620 annual loss in money to recruit players.

Then there’s the postseason money. the ACC conference, of which Miami is a part, gets an automatic bid to the BCS Orange Bowl, which has a $17 million payout to be distributed among members of the participating conference. if Miami is banned from postseason play, they would lose their share, as well as any payout they would get from a lesser bowl game. if they were eighth place in the ACC conference, the worst possible placing to receive a bowl bid, Miami would go to the Military bowl in Washington, D.C., and receive an estimated payout of $862,500. the payouts only go up from there.

Ohio State: approximately $13, 208, 605, (mostly Jim Tressel’s salary).

Miami: $3,931 so far, in player restitutions. but when the NCAA completes its investigation, the losses to the program could be in the millions.

Researchers have long known that the disease is caused by “disrupted brain development” and believe that it likely spawns from a combination environmental factors, such as poor nutrition during pregnancy, and genetic ones. Studies such as the Denmark one attempt to shed more light on the disorder.

As an older, first-time dad (my triplets were born weeks before I turned 39), I must say — I found the numbers to be staggering.

The first children born to fathers who were between the ages of 25 and 29 stood a .5% chance of being schizophrenic, as compared to the overall rate of 1%. That chance went up to .7% for the first children born to men in their 30s, 1.2% to men in their 40s, and 2% to men in their 50s.

Perhaps, researchers have speculated, older dads are more likely to have genetic abnormalities in their sperm. However, according to Dr. Liselotte Peterson, these new findings cast doubt on that. The Aarhus University professor points out that if such were the case, then each of an older dad’s children would be at risk as opposed to only his first child.

Instead, Peterson and her colleagues have another theory to help explain the phenomenon. in an email to Reuters Health, Peterson speculates that perhaps men who have a predisposition to schizophrenia, yet do not have the disorder, tend to have children later in life. That, of course, leads to the following question. why do these men tend to have children later in life?

One possibility offered by Peterson is that they may have personality traits which makes it more difficult for them to find a partner. (Wonder if they had a bunch of older sisters?) Maybe I’m being overly sensitive, but that struck me as a bit harsh.

Not to mention the fact that I don’t follow the professor’s entire thread of logic on this one. it seems to me that Dr. Peterson’s “unlucky in love” theory has the exact same hole as the theory she claims the new study shot down. it doesn’t account for why there is NOT an increased rate of schizophrenia with second children.

Still, the numbers are sobering. And thanks to them, as well as to the entire study, I’ll likely over overanalyze each and every meltdown my triplets go on to have. (Not to mention my own.)

When the towers fell I was on temporary duty in Central California with my regular job.

I desperately wanted to get back to my fire station in Lake County. as a volunteer firefighter for many years I was part of the brotherhood and sisterhood you hear about that comes with the fire service.

the nation was in mourning; the fire service was stunned. So many lives lost, so many fallen brothers and sisters.

in the days that followed, every single firefighter I know wanted to run to new York City to assist in any way they could to rescue and recover their brothers.

the final count was 343 fallen firefighters.

brave souls.

as I remember the events of 10 years ago the emotion that wells up in me is raw. Most of us memorialized the tragedy with tattoos. Some adorned themselves with American flags, Maltese crosses with flames and names of engine companies. my Sept. 11 tattoo is on my chest; it depicts my structure helmet with Station 70 on the front, pickaxes crossed behind it, the words “Bravery, Honor, Sacrifice” and of course, flames.

as I hold back tears I recall the amazing community outpouring when we stood on Lakeshore Drive in uniform on the one-year anniversary. with our boots in hand we raised money for the widows and orphans of FDNY.

People emptied their wallets and dumped coins from their ashtrays. One woman recalled that we responded to her house for an emergency involving her young son. she dropped what money she had in my boot and gave me a hug. my brothers on the street experienced the same gratitude from our community all over town.

the tragedy brought people together, in love and in appreciation for life.

Our fire captain at the time, Willie Sapeta, was a strong leader and swift to pull our ranks together across the county, appropriate money for weapons of mass destruction response training, coordinate efforts with law enforcement and ensure that our rural first responders were as prepared as we could be.

Can anybody really be prepared for such a monstrous disaster? now a Battalion Chief, Sapeta says that there’s a “heightened awareness and increased vulnerability” since the towers fell. “We’re not just firefighters and first responders anymore. We’re disaster workers.” Firefighters are the first to respond to terrorist attacks, environmental emergencies, explosions, earthquakes, floods, bridge or roadway collapse, you name it.

in the wake of Sept. 11 the newly formed Department of Homeland Security provided grants to rural fire departments to use for training and equipment.

Sapeta was instrumental in making sure Lake County received a fair share of the grant money.

Sapeta said there is a higher respect among law enforcement and the fire service. “It was phenomenal how all the agencies pulled together.” especially today, 10 years later, all the county agencies including police, fire, animal control, fish and game, dispatchers and tribal police work together to save lives and protect property.

even as preparations for Sept. 11 ceremonies and memorial events planned for this weekend are ongoing, as a member of the county’s emergency management team; Sapeta says his focus is on “protection of the attendees.”

First responders suffered a great loss that day. Always loved, never forgotten, are the men and women who gave their lives on Sept. 11, 2001.

even as our community stands in unity to remember the fallen, our local heroes await your call for service. they stand in bravery, honor, and sacrifice.

U niversity of Colorado sophomore Kelly Cremer rushed across the Boulder campus to class Tuesday morning.

Showing up tardy was not an option for Cremer, who was sporting the letters of her Chi Omega sorority on her tank top.

Cremer said despite her good grades and attendance, some professors have negative perceptions of students in the Greek system, and being on time is just one way she is working to combat judgement.

“We make sure to tell the girls that when they wear letters to class they should look presentable,” Cremer said. “Don’t wear them if you look hungover or like you just woke up. we have to represent them in a positive way.”

In the fall, the Chi Omega sorority — along with nine other CU sororities — will host professor dinners at the house, inviting faculty to meet some of the members in hopes of quashing some of the negative impressions, Cremer said.

Karen Tracy, communication professor and associate chair of undergraduate studies, said Greek letters are just one of the factors that create a negative first impression for some faculty.

“I make assumptions of their social and intellectual interests,” Tracy said. “I may think they are more concerned about the social aspects of college life and class is not necessarily their first priority.”

Tracy said she typically associates males in the Greek system with partying and is more likely to give the benefit of the doubt to sorority girls, who have proved in the past to be some of her best students.

The gender discrepancy could be caused by the fact that Boulder fraternities are not affiliated with CU after pledge Gordie Bailey died of alcohol poisoning in 2004, causing them to part ways. Sororities re-established a relationship with CU in 2009, contingent on rules set by the university to help keep members safe.

“The feeling I got from the disassociation was that fraternities weren’t willing to be partners in the academic mission of the university,” CU business professor Joseph Rosse said. “That doesn’t engender real positive feelings towards them.”

CU sophomore Jake Silverman, member of Sigma Phi Epsilon, wore his letters to class Tuesday and said he is aware that most professors assume he parties more than students who are not showing their Greek affiliations.

“I just try to do well and show them I care,” Silverman said.

Rosse said his experience as a professor has made him slow to judge.

“I’ve met an awful lot of students who participate in Greek life to practice leadership roles,” Rosse said. “I tend to think of that first now, so if I have any thought at all it’s likely that, on a positive level.”

Despite her unintentional assumptions, Tracy said Greek affiliation is no more damaging than piercings, tattoos, or many other factors that could be connected to a generalization.

“Greek is just a tiny piece of it,” Tracy said. “At then end of the day, it’s about how they perform in class. I think a lot of those judgements are changed once I get to know the students.”

CU sophomore and member of Alpha Phi, Allie James, said she wears her letters at least once a week.

“It’s the same as wearing a Colorado shirt for school pride,” James said. “It’s showing your pride for your sorority.”

Port of Tacoma hosts popular annual boat tour

PORT OF TACOMA BOAT TOUR

Port of Tacoma visitors experienced a ship-side view of port activities on board a free, annual guided boat tour Aug. 28 during the Tacoma Maritime Fest. during the narrated tour down the Sitcum and Blair waterways, visitors saw ships and marine terminals up close, cruised under the world’s largest container cranes, glimpsed Port-constructed wildlife habitat and learned about some of the other Tideflats-based businesses that boost the region’s economy. Participants boarded a 400-passenger boat at Thea’s Park for the two-hour tour, and kids enjoyed activities such as coloring magnets, creating words with signal flags, and donning colorful temporary tattoos.

And I have to admit, they look TOTALLY COOL.

It’s not an everyday look, that’s for sure, but for a special occasion, it would be fantastic to have perfectly drawn on cats’ eye eyeliner.

There’s only one thing stopping me from snatching these temporary tattoos up …

Seriously, I’m still dying to try it out, but at that price, I want to read more real-life reviews first. the only reviews up on Sephora right now are from a few idiots who’ve written glowing ‘reviews’ of the tattoos — without even receiving them first.

Still, this could be the new wave in eyeliner, for those of us who have trouble getting that line just right. but I worry about what to do if I get the line slightly off-center. not only will I have wasted $15, I’m sure that trying to get it off my eyes would cause some damage to a very sensitive part of my body.

So basically, my feelings are mixed.
