TATTOOS are designed to last for life – but nothing endures that long in Hollywood. Film stars such as Megan Fox, the Transformers actress, who helped to make them fashionable are now leading a backlash against "body art".

Fox is undergoing painful treatment to remove a portrait of Marilyn Monroe from her arm. the 25-year-old actress told an Italian magazine last week that the Monroe portrait was being erased because it got in the way of her work. "It’s too negative," she said.

Statistics suggest Fox is far from alone. according to a Harris poll, the number of tattooed Americans, which was below 10 per cent until 1990, soared to 16 per cent in 2003 but fell back to 14 per cent in 2008.

Since then the number of US tattoo parlours has fallen by 10 per cent and laser removal treatments are booming, according to the American Academy of Dermatology.

"not everyone is erasing them entirely – just off the hands, arms and faces, which might get in the way of the next job," the academy said last week.

While elaborate designs may still be popular in jails, Silicon Valley and other youth-oriented centres of enterprise, elsewhere they are being removed.

"Starbucks may have accepted them but other retailers are turning away jobseekers because their tattoos may unsettle older shoppers," said the Texas Chamber of Commerce.

Body art may also unsettle jurors: last year John Ditullio, once a leading member of Florida’s neo-nazi movement, asked a judge to employ a make-up artist to cover the swastika on his neck during his murder trail. he was still found guilty.

Police officers in Phoenix, Arizona, have been ordered to cover up all tattoos. "we are professional and don’t want to give anyone a reason to mistrust us," said the Phoenix force, which has also banned pierced tongues.

A tattooist has pledged to make his business bigger and better after his new studio was repeatedly rammed by a van.

The attack at Studio 244 tattoo parlour in Rochdale was captured by a CCTV camera and caused damage estimated at around £50,000.

The shocking footage shows a white LDV van reverse at speed three times into the shop front.

Devastated owner John Hurn, 29, believes the attack was carried out by thugs who had threatened him weeks earlier.

Police are investigating and appealing for witnesses. the shop, on Oldham Road, has been left in ruins.

Mr Hurn, from Freehold, Rochdale, opened the studio with the help of his sister Kimberley Davies six weeks ago.

Both had completed formal tattoo training courses.

Mr Hurn said: “I am absolutely devastated. I just had to sit down when I saw the shop and could not stop shaking. the whole place has just been annihilated.

“All the tools are ruined, the gas pipes, the interior – everything. This was my livelihood.

“We had only been open three weeks when someone visited me and told me I was going to be fire-bombed if I did not close, but would not tell me why.

“I hadn’t heard anything since so I just thought it was rubbish.”

The CCTV footage, recorded at around 3am on July 16, shows the van turn left off Oldham Road into a side street.

It then reverses at speed into the shop before driving off. Dust from the wreckage of the studio is captured on the film.

Mr Hurn said he was determined to rebuild the business.

“My sister has spent a lot of money on this business and showed absolute faith in me,” he added. “It is devastating for us both. I have only been open a month and a half and the business had really just started to take off.

“I was on benefits without a job but trained up and set up my own business. Now this has happened and it just makes you think ‘what’s the point?’

“But we are going to come back bigger and better. we are not going to let them win.”

The van was later found abandoned on Charter Street.

Pc Andrew Marsh said: “This was a deliberate and malicious attack on a local, independent business and I am keen to hear from anyone who has information about the person responsible.

“Did anyone hear the commotion or see the van being abandoned? Perhaps you have heard someone talking about it. if so, please get in touch.”

No better way to spend 12 or 14 hours.

Mind you, this was not just another tattoo. the Thunder guard added to his heavily tattooed right arm by having the entire thing inked Monday afternoon. on a background of clouds that run shoulder to wrist, there is a dove, a basketball with a crown, a silhouette of the three crucifixion crosses, another dove and another cross.

Maynor’s post on Twitter: “im just getting the whole sleeve right now.”

Teammate James Harden tweeted a bit later that he was there watching Maynor get inked.

“Should I get my 1st tat?” he asked.

Maynor responded, “yessssssir.”

Seems like it’s only a matter of time. Getting a tattoo is catching on the Thunder like runny noses at a daycare.

It wasn’t that long ago that few players on this team had a visible tattoo. when the franchise arrived in town talking about how it would play different, act different, be different, you believed it even more because they looked different than most other NBA teams.

About the only reason the Thunder even registered on the tattoo radar was Robert Swift. Even though Chris Wilcox and a couple others had tattoos, Swift had more skin that was tattooed than skin that wasn’t. he had ink everywhere — and we do mean everywhere. our man Darnell Mayberry was talking to Swift about his tattoos once when the big man pulled down his lower lip. there on the inside of his lip were the words “NO FEAR”.

Then, the Thunder went out and traded for Thabo Sefolosha. the defensive wiz had a big tattoo on his left bicep — “The Game Chose Me,” it reads — but hey, Thabo is from Switzerland. different strokes for different folks.

Then came Maynor and Daequan Cook and their tattoos.

The truth is, this bunch has more ink than most folks know.

One day sitting courtside several hours before a game, I happened to glance up from my laptop as Kevin Durant was getting in his pregame work. the Thunder superstar had worked up quite a sweat, and he grabbed the bottom of his jersey, lifted it to his face and dried his sweat.

You may not like these guys’ tattoos, but they do. they are tweeting about them. they are posting pictures of them.

When I was a little girl I used to look at my dad’s arms and the pictures he had painted on them. this was a normal thing for me, I thought that all dads had them, as most of the men who came to our house had their arms decorated in the same way. These picture were of course tattoos, not temporary tattoos but two ugly permanent ones.

I thought they were ugly and uninteresting, but of course I never said. then when my own daughter was about 16, tattoos came into my life again.

It was a very hot summer in Valencia, where we had a flat, she hates the heat so normally loved to go swimming. We had bought her a new bikini but I couldn’t understand why she didn’t want togo. anyway to cut a long story short she never wore that new bikini.

Back in Valencia for the new Year she was bending down,when I suddenly saw a tattoo on her back, small as it was it was not a temporary tattoo. A butterfly. I hit the roof. How could a daughter of mine with such an education resort to this? I was extremely upset and called her everything.

I really wish that that tattoo artist in Surrey had asked for her age, in fact she wasn’t 18 or failing this. Why hadn’t he encouraged her to have a temporary tattoo?

Well, it all began then, little by little she started have more and more. A teenage craze my friends would say. If only I thought, every time I saw her she seemed to have more. Some of them aren’t too bad, but I really hope that she never regrets not having used removable tattoos. She is now 26 and if she were earning more, I’m sure she would have more tattoos. this is dedicated to her, she’s an adult and has the right to do what she wants with her own body, but think and why not use temporary tattoos in the future….
