COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Ohio State University on Tuesday dropped its review of car purchases by football players and family members after two separate investigations found dealerships made money on almost all of the sales.

The university made its decision in light of a report by the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles and a separate review by the Ohio Independent Automobile Dealers Association.

“We have seen no evidence that would lead us to believe that Ohio State student athletes violated any policies when purchasing used cars,” said university spokesman Jim Lynch.

The reviews were launched after questions about players’ car purchases arose in the wake of a scandal in which some players received cash and tattoos for autographs, championship rings and equipment.

In a 65-page report issued Tuesday, the state BMV said two Columbus-area dealerships made money on 24 of 25 sales made to players and family members.

The BMV, however, did not interview Ohio State players or officials and did not examine records of financial transactions that players file with the university’s athletic compliance office. the report also did not address whether players received discounts not available to the public. Such a discount could be an NCAA violation.

Jason Goss, owner of Columbus-dealership Auto Direct, said Tuesday that players who bought cars from him did not receive discounts not available to the public.

“Absolutely not,” he said.

“I know what was in our deals. I know what we sold the cars for and what we paid for the cars,” Goss said. “What we made was a normal profit that we would make on any customer that would come here.”

In its report, the BMV said the certificates of titles for 25 vehicle sales by Jack Maxton Chevrolet and Auto Direct to Ohio State players and their families accurately reflected the vehicles’ sales prices.

According to the report, Auto Direct made money on the 10 vehicles it sold to players and their families and Jack Maxton made money on 14 of 15 sales; one vehicle was sold at a loss because it had been on the lot longer than 150 days.

A BMV investigator found vehicles bought at Auto Direct were sold for an average of $2,000 over their wholesale purchase prices, the report said.

Auto Direct owner Jason Goss told an investigator “he is not in the business to sell vehicles at a loss and has never discounted the price of vehicle in lieu of sports memorabilia or anything related to O.S.U. athletics.”

The BMV investigation found no evidence that tickets and/or sports memorabilia were included in the sales.

“The deals that I did for Ohio State student-athletes were no different than any of the other 10,000-plus deals that I’ve done for all my other customers,” said Aaron Kniffin, the salesman who sold most of the vehicles at both dealerships, in a May 10 affidavit.

Kniffin said any sales involving Ohio State players were forwarded to the general manager, who contacted Ohio State’s compliance office.

The review by the independent auto dealers association of Auto Direct sales found no evidence of improper titling or sales tax calculations and said the paperwork on all sales complied with state and federal laws.

All vehicles were sold at fair market value and profit margins were consistent with the company’s average profit per unit and the national average for used car dealers, James Mitchell, OIADA executive director, said in a May 18 letter to Goss released Tuesday by Ohio State.

There “was no preferential treatment,” Mitchell wrote.

Ohio State President Gordon Gee said Tuesday the BMV’s findings weren’t surprising.

“The university has a very strong compliance system,” he said. “We have always tried to make certain that we are on solid ground on these issues.”

Gee added: “That doesn’t mean to say we’re not going to be surprised once in a while.”

A lawyer for former Ohio State quarterback Terrelle Pryor said the BMV report confirms Pryor never received special treatment in his dealings with Auto Direct, which included a repair on one of Pryor’s cars and a $11,435 purchase of a 2007 Nissan by Pryor’s mother.

“There has been no testimony from any credible source that any OSU Student Athlete received special benefits beyond those that any customer received in having their car repaired or in considering the purchase of a vehicle,” attorney Larry James wrote in a memo Tuesday to Doug Archie, Ohio State’s athletics compliance director.

Pryor was one of five players suspended for the first five games of the 2011 season for taking money and tattoos from local tattoo-parlor owner Edward Rife, who signed an agreement in May to plead guilty to federal drug trafficking and money-laundering charges.

Pryor announced earlier this month he wouldn’t return for his senior year. he is now aiming to be selected in the NFL’s supplemental draft this summer.

The BMV report also addressed what it called “persistent allegations” that Ohio State athletes and coaches have been allowed to drive dealer-owned cars using dealer license plates.

That practice is not illegal and is allowed under BMV rules, the agency said.

“On the contrary, the statute that governs the use of dealer-plated vehicles by third parties expressly permits dealers to allow any member of the public to operate dealer-owned vehicles,” the agency said in its report.

In a May 12 interview with the Ohio Inspector General, Kniffin said Jeff Mauk, owner of Jack Maxton Chevrolet, received tickets from Ohio State coaches for giving them cars to drive. Kniffin said that was a common practice, according to the interview included in the BMV report. a message was left for Mauk seeking comment.

Oklahoma State to start building $16M practice site

STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) — Oklahoma State plans to start construction this summer on a new $16 million indoor practice facility that has been in the works for years.

A broken right collarbone at the start of fall camp further hindered his development, both on the field and in Iowa’s highly respected conditioning program.

None of that seemed to matter by December, when Coker ripped apart Missouri’s top-notch defense for 219 yards on 33 carries in leading Iowa to a win in the Insight Bowl.

The starting job is now unquestionably Coker’s and he’s hoping his first full offseason program with the Hawkeyes will help him blossom into one of the big Ten’s best backs.

“If you have a lot to live up to, you’re going to push yourself harder,” Coker said. “I feel like I have a lot put on me this year, so I try to live up to that.”

Coker’s emergence as Iowa’s lead back is both a testament to his physical and mental maturity and a sign of just how much turbulence the Hawkeyes have seen at that spot.

Coker certainly seems poised to shut that revolving door.

Coker, who turned 19 just last month, was a prep star at DeMatha Catholic in Maryland, an area where the Hawkeyes have recently expanded their recruiting efforts. he rushed for 1,698 yards on over 10 yards per carry and 23 touchdowns as a senior, and with over 1,000 hours of volunteer community service under his belt his off-the-field resume appeared equally as impressive.

Initially, the plan was to ease Coker into playing time. After all, the Hawkeyes had three backs just a year ahead of him in Brandon Wegher, Jewel Hampton and Adam Robinson.

But Wegher abruptly left the team before camp had barely started, and Hampton transferred to Southern Illinois after the second blown knee of his young career. Robinson, who suddenly found himself as the first and seemingly only trusted option last fall, played well for most of the season before academic issues and an arrest for marijuana possession — on the eve of the Insight Bowl, for which he was already suspended for failing to comply with team policies.

A mysterious heart issue sidelined freshman running back/fullback Brad Rogers for the bowl game, leaving Coker as the only guy remaining in Iowa’s backfield.

Coker had shown promise with strong efforts against Indiana and Ohio State, and seemed to handle the pounding that night in Arizona without a problem. he set the program’s record for carries and yards in a bowl game against the Tigers, while breaking off a 62-yard TD run that showcased his power through holes and his speed once he gets past them.

Still, if Coker’s going to handle the weekly grind of the big ten as Iowa’s starting running back — a spot that rarely gets a breather — he knows this summer will be a critical one for building his strength and conditioning.

Coker finished with 622 yards rushing as a true freshman last season despite making just four starts. he, junior quarterback James Vandenberg and receiver Keenan Davis headline a group of relatively inexperienced offensive players the Hawkeyes need to have breakout seasons in 2011.

“He has the mindset of a veteran,” senior wide receiver Marvin McNutt said of Coker. “There’s going to be some young guys that have to step up, but they’re not going to do it alone. We’re all teammates out here. We’re going to be able to do it as a process together.”

Coker said Tuesday that he’s approaching workouts with the mindset that he’s last on the depth chart, which shouldn’t be all that tough for him given that that’s exactly where he sat 12 months ago. but he’s also looking forward to the opportunity to carry

The names of the 2011 Stanley Cup champs will forever be etched on sport’s greatest trophy — and love for the Bruins [team stats] will forever be tattooed on the bodies of some of the team’s most fervent fans.

“We’ve been getting calls all morning long,” Larry Allen, manager of The Painted Bird Tattoo shop in Medford, said yesterday. “in fact, we’ve got two guys in the lobby right now waiting to get the Bruins logo.”

Since the start of the Stanley Cup finals, two to three customers a day have visited Allen’s shop to get a Bruins badge, he said.

The basic spoked B logo has been a customer favorite, but at Ferry Street Ink in Everett, 22-year-old Jordan Rogers of Bridgewater yesterday sought a more creative tattoo for his torso: a picture of Smokey the Bear with the Stanley Cup.

“I made a bet with my buddy in 2007 when I was a sophomore in college that if the Bruins win before I graduate, I’d get this tattoo,” said Rogers, a student at the University of Massachusetts at Boston.

Buddy Ricci of Malden already had Bruins tattoos when he walked in to Ferry Street Ink, but he wanted to improve one with the addition of a short line of text: “Stanley Cup Champions 2011.”

Ricci has four tattoos in honor of his beloved B’s. but he has designs on a new one: a flying Bobby Orr.

“Tattoos show my love for the Bruins, and I wear them to show my pride,” said Ricci, who also has nine other tattoos from the waist up.

Medford resident William Ivey also was in line yesterday for some B’s ink: a picture of the Stanley Cup and the spoked B logo tattooed on his chest.

“when anyone wants to put something on their body for the rest of their life, it’s always meaningful,” said Ferry Street Ink owner Shawn Coyle.
